The top universities for communications in 2021

The communications field offers a myriad of career paths —classes may include future photojournalists, aspiring advertisers, filmmakers, and more. Some of the majors you can study in this field include advertising, creative writing, digital media, editing and publishing, film, journalism, media studies, professional writing, public relations and radio. 

Our ratings look at specific strengths of Australian universities, giving insight to support and guide your decision-making when choosing a university.  

There are over 580 undergraduate communications degrees listed on The Good Universities Guide course search, and 292 postgraduate courses. This month, we looked at which universities with undergraduate degrees in communications performed best in overall experience, full-time employment and learning resources. 

Overall Experience 

This rating looks at the proportion of students who were satisfied with the overall quality of their educational experience. Top spot goes to The University of Melbourne with a 95.3% satisfaction rate, second goes to University of New England (UNE) with 93.2%, and University of Tasmania hot on its heels in third place with 93%. 

Full-Time Employment 

This rating compares the employment rates of graduates from different universities. It looks at the proportion of graduates who were employed full time four months after completing their course. Charles Sturt University in ranked highest, with an employment rate of 79.2% followed University of Tasmania with a score of 78.3%. 

Learning Resources 

This rating looks at the proportion of students who were satisfied with the learning resources provided by their institution. It is based on students’ average ratings of teaching spaces (including lecture theatres, laboratories and tutorial rooms), student spaces and common areas, online learning materials, computing and IT resources, assigned books and notes, laboratory or studio equipment and library facilities. Monash University took the top spot with a satisfaction rate of 93.1%, followed by University of South Australia, which scored 91.7%.
